CDC Kitchen

The Child Development Center in Anchorage is now cooking up fabulous meals for the kids in a brand new commercial-grade kitchen, thanks to a legislative grant award secured by Senator Hollis French and Senator Lesil McGuire. After months of planning and construction, CDC hosted a ribbon cutting and open house in on August 5.

The Mat-Su Health Foundation granted the Boys & Girls
Clubs of Mat-Su and Goose Bay $25,000 in support of the “AK 4 Life”
program, which is designed to help youth learn about healthy living and
different ways to exercise and recreate. This partnership between the
Clubs and Mat-Su Health Foundation is focused on the Alaskan 2010
Leading Health Indicators that target youth violence reduction and
suicide prevention. 

The Central Council of Tlingit and Haida Indian Tribes of Alaska
has awarded Boys & Girls Clubs in Angoon, Kake, Ketchikan, Klawock,
Petersburg, and Sitka a grant of $60,000 to provide programming to Club
members through Project Learn, SMART Moves, and SMART Activities. This
long standing partnership between CCTHITA and the Southeast Clubs has
been of great benefit to children and youth in these communities.

Lowe’s Charitable & Educational Foundation
is providing
$25,000, along with an additional $3,600 from the three Anchorage
Lowe’s stores, in support of Safe Flooring for Youth and Children at
the Woodland Park Facility. The effort will replace aging flooring at
Woodland Park in the Clubhouse and the Child Development Center.

U.S. Department of Health & Human Services, Centers for Disease Control (CDC) granted $714,000 for Triple Play programming for Clubhouses in rural Alaska as part of an obesity prevention project.

U.S. Department of Health & Human Services, Substance Abuse & Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) under their Drug Free Communities program granted $99,988 in support of the Red Ribbon Coalition.

U.S. Department of Justice, Office of Justice Programs
granted
Recovery Act funding through Boys & Girls Clubs of America,
totalling $170,000 for Clubhouses in Mountain View, Woodland Park,
Eagle River, Fairbanks, and Mat-Su.

Best Buy Children’s Foundation gave $4,500 for Project Learn programming at the Woodland Park, Eagle River, Mt. View and Northeast Clubhouses.

Kenai Peninsula Borough, Parks & Recreation Department granted $14,000 for the Tyonek Clubhouse in support of recreational programming.

Ketchikan Gateway Borough is funding $30,000 in operational support for the Ketchikan Clubhouse.

 

April - July 2009

Providence employees were recently challenged to Step It Up For Kids during a 6-week physical activity that raised $5,000 for the Mountain View Boys & Girls Club. The Club will be using the dollars to buy supplies and equipment to support the Triple Play program, which educates Club youth on healthy habits, good nutrition, and physical fitness,  strengthening their ability to interact positively with others and to engage in healthy relationships.

Clubhouses in Anchorage hosted a team of 12 AmeriCorps volunteers from May to July. The AmeriCorps team assisted Clubs with several projects, including: making improvements to the hockey rink at Woodland Park; running programs in the Clubs, such as Dragonfly Quest, Youth for Unity, and Club Semester of Service projects; leading sports, fitness, and recreation in the Clubs, which were full with members looking for fun things to do. During their time in Alaska, the team provided over 4,000 hours of service to the Clubs!

Association of Alaska School Boards, AK ICE awarded $13,000 for the Youth Development Specialist position working with Anchorage United for Youth to provide youth development training to staff at youth-serving agencies,  $500 to Eagle River to produce a documentary on the Youth Litter Patrol in their community, and $500 to Woodland Park for their Teens for Teens effort, where Club teens prepare satchels of personal hygiene items for youth at Covenant House.

United Way of Anchorage has allocated $164,608 for program support.

United Way of the Tanana Valley awarded a $29,549 allocation for program support for the Tanana Valley Clubs.

Aleutian Housing Authority awarded $12,000 for Project LEARN and Youth of the Year in Sand Point. The grant is federal funding matched with support from Unga Tribe and Pauloff Harbor Tribe.

Chevron awarded $5,000 to the Barrow Clubhouse and $5,000 to the Nuiqsit Clubhouse for Project LEARN and SMART Moves programming.

Tesoro raised $4,549.28 for the Clubs through a month-long charity jar program in their stores.

Wal-Mart
awarded $25,000 for Project Learn programming in Anchorage, Mat-Su, Fairbanks, and Juneau.

Regal Entertainment Group through Boys & Girls Clubs of America awarded $3,000 to the Northeast Community Center and $3,000 to the Mountain View Community Center for the Free Family Film Festival program.

Staples Foundation for Learning
awarded  $500 for Torch Club programming in Klawock.
